His performance was even more remarkable given that it came on what would have been the 23rd birthday of his sister, Chyna, who was killed in a vehicle crash just before the playoffs began. "Never in my life have I thought about quitting", Thomas told the family and friends who gathered to celebrate the life of Chyna Thomas, who died April 15 after a single-vehicle accident. The Celtics successfully hid Thomas on Kelly Oubre (12 points), who hesitated to make his move on the 5-9 point guard and allowed help to come seal him from the rim twice on blocked shots.

"(Earlier) today my mouth was so swollen I had to go back to the hospital to get a few meds to get the swelling down because I could barely talk", Thomas said.

"I was playing great defense on him 1-on-1", said Wall. "I wanted to win for her".

He did more than that, eclipsing his former career-best 52 points in a regular-season victory over Miami this season and his former playoff best of 42 previous year against Atlanta.

Al Horford added 15 points and 12 rebounds, Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder each had 14 while Terry Rozier was a spark plug off the bench with 12 for Boston.

Thomas scored 53 points, a career playoff high, and only John Havlicek (54 points) has scored more in a playoff game in Celtics history.

Thomas missed practice Monday while undergoing oral surgery, and Stevens said he believes the All-Star had to undergo more work before Tuesday's game, in part because the damage was more than just the lost tooth.

"What else is there to say?"

"I didn't know if we'd ever score and I didn't know if they've ever stop scoring", Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. "There was a point today where he was not feeling good at all".

The WIzrds were in one of the tougher first round match-ups and they did well to dispatch in six games and not allow the series to go seven. "He not only guts it out, he ends up with 50".

Thomas scored a game-high 33 points on 11-of-23 shooting and added nine assists in 38 minutes as the Celtics rallied for a 123-111 win over the Wizards.

The Washington Wizards have scored greater than the Boston Celtics in the first and last quarter of the Game 2.

The Wizards shot almost 51 percent in that game but only connected for 10-of-23 triples, nine fewer long balls than the Celtics made, which obviously proved to be a difference. "Two teams played their hearts out". I think it should be a pretty fun series start to finish.

But the Boston battled back with a 30-16 blitz to take a 59-58 lead late in second before Washington closed the half strong to take a five-point edge. Wizards had a chance to win but Bradley Beal missed an uncontested shot from 15 feet at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

WARRIORS 106, JAZZ 94: Steph Curry scored 22 points, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green each scored 17 and the well-rested Warriors had no problem with Utah in Game One of the Western Conference semifinals.

"They're a fast-breaking team and we're basically not", Utah's Joe Johnson said. "We were a little beat up".

"We just got to do a better job of making things hard for these guys". The 1988 Rookie of the Year joined ESPN in 2006 and called games on ESPN and ABC through 2011 before leaving to coach the Golden State Warriors.
