When pressed if the rumours of a Top Gun sequel were true, Cruise confirmed the news.

The ' Edge of Tomorrow' star, while giving an interview to an Australian morning-show Sunrise, said, "It is definitely happening". "I'm going to start filming it, probably in the next year", Cruise said with his trademark big grin. The conversation ended with a look into Cruise's past when one Sunrise host asked the actor to comment on the Top Gun 2 rumors.

"It's an iconic character that he helped create, so I think we would like to see what happened to Maverick".

"It's happening, it's definitely happening".

A follow-up to Tony Scott's 1986 hit has been in the works for quite some time with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

Cruise is now on the promotion trail for his new movie The Mummy. There was also that mysterious meet-up between Cruise and film producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

"Hell yes", the actor told a Reddit user during an AMA earlier this year, after being asked if he would agree to be in the sequel.

What Cruise said Tuesday confirms that Top Gun 2 is next on his list, as he'll be doing production and promotion for M:I6 clear until its release next summer.
