A Federal Bureau of Investigation lab team looks for evidence in the outfield signage at the ball field which is the scene of a multiple shooting in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, after a rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice, wounding House GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and several others as congressmen and aides dove for cover.

As his colleagues played baseball in his honor Thursday evening, MedStar Washington Hospital Center medical gave an update on Rep. Steve Scalise, who remains in critical condition but has improved.

The morning after visiting Scalise in the hospital, Trump said the congressman's challenges are "more difficult" than first thought.

The bullet struck Scalise in the hip, and traveled across his body, shattering bones and passing through internal organs, causing major internal bleeding.

The FBI says the shooter, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, was killed by police.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi had been discussing "protocol and resources for members' safety" even before the attack, said a Ryan spokeswoman, AshLee Strong.

A shooting on Wednesday morning that targeted members of Congress was not enough to stop them from playing in the annual Congressional baseball game on Thursday night. They said Scalise dragged himself from the infield as the shooting continued.

Sava said that after being released from the hospital, Scalise "will require a period of healing and rehabilitation".

Capitol Hill Democrats have a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning at the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game, an annual tradition that has taken on renewed importance in the wake of Wednesday's shooting in Alexandria, Virginia.

LSU officials say the university sent t-shirts, hats, towels, and other items for congressional members to wear for the game to show support for Scalise.

"The Congressman's status remains critical, we are encouraged by improvement in his condition over the last 36 hours", Sava stated.

"I feel a lot more optimistic than I did two or three days ago". The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.

Nonetheless, said Sava, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run".

At the end of the game when Democratic manager Pennsylvania Rep. Mike Doyle was presented the winning trophy, he called Republican manager Texas Rep. Joe Barton to join him.

A huge ovation swept the park when Special Agent David Bailey, one of the Capitol Police officers injured in the attack, threw out the first pitch. Griner is still hospitalized at MedStar and "in good spirits", Sava said.

"We continue to hold all of those wounded and fighting for recovery in our hearts and prayers, including Matt Mika, who was also badly wounded", he added. On Friday, Bailey was spotted back in the Capitol building, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
