A Grambling State University student and another young man were shot and killed on the campus of the HBCU early Wednesday.
They also think there was an altercation in a dorm room that led to the shooting, which took place outside in a school courtyard.
Sheriff Mike Stone said in a statement that the suspect and victims knew each other "to some extent" and stressed that the shooting wasn't random or an act of terrorism.
One of the victims was identified as Earl Andrews, 23, a student at the university, Grambling State University Media Relations Director Will Sutton told local news outlets. An unnamed female student called the campus police after the incident and that is when the two dead bodies were discovered.
A shooting at the Grambling State University (GSU) in Louisiana around midnight Tuesday claimed two lives, it has been reported. Caldwell was not enrolled at the school, Sutton said.
"It's a disgusting thing to happen on any day of the week, any week", Sutton said.
"Our prayers are with the victims and their families. This is a most unfortunate situation".
The campus was not put on lockdown following the incident, but students are being advised to stay inside.
In order to keep students safe, the sheriff has made plans for "extra patrol on and around GSU campus for the foreseeable future".
