KRQE News 13 reported that there is a suspect in custody at this time. The victims were students, but it was not immediately clear whether the shooter attended Aztec High School.

The shooting took place a week before the fifth anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the deadliest school shooting in US history.

The Bloomfield Police Department is asking parents to stay away from the school until further notice. All students faculty and staff are accounted for. The shooting also prompted precautionary lock downs of other area schools.

The following unconfirmed report posted on Twitter claims that "multiple people" were wounded in this morning's shooting. Parents are able to pick up their children at 516 and Mesa Verde, after they are checked in and accounted for.

Aztec is a rural community of 6,500 people in the heart of northwestern New Mexico's oil and gas country and near the Navajo Nation.
