As questions surround Florida State's bowl eligibility, Independence Bowl will go on

"This is a matter between the NCAA, Florida State and Delaware State".

Southern Miss: The Golden Eagles came into the game averaging the fourth-fewest turnovers in Division I (8.8 per game) but committed a season-high 19 against FSU.

Neither the Seminoles, ACC or NCAA noticed this, and the Independence Bowl extended an invitation to FSU.

Florida State secured a bowl bid for a 36th consecutive season - what the school boasts as an ongoing national record - thanks to three straight wins to close out its schedule, concluding with a rescheduled game against Louisiana-Monroe on December 2. Wins over FCS schools only count for bowl eligibility if that FCS school has "awarded at least 90% of the FCS scholarship limit".

A Reddit user's findings led to Florida State being found ineligible for the Independence Bowl against Southern Mississippi, but the Seminoles will still play in the game, according to college football reporter Brett McMurphy. When this game was scheduled earlier this year, the Hornets may have been at that 90 percent mark (or 56.7 scholarships for non-math majors) and they may have been at the start of the season before suspensions, dismissals or transfers that happened over the course of a year.

The issue is Delaware State, an FCS team that Florida State beat 77-6, has not offered enough scholarships to its players in the most recent two-year period to count as a win for bowl eligibility purposes.

Florida State fans should be giving thanks for this "monumental oversight".

The PR director for the Independence Bowl told the Orlando Sentinel that he expects Florida State to play next Wednesday.

It's not that hard to reach a bowl game-this year, 78 NCAA football teams can claim they have.

For the Seminoles it's a stroke of luck that will allow them to continue their bowl streak, albeit with an asterisk.

"I don't know anything about that", he said.

Instead, it's just the latest bad news for Florida State.

"The most obvious is that Florida State applies for a Waiver under 18.7.2.1.1.1".

"We're focused on this football team and being the best Florida state football team we can be", interim coach Odell Haggins said after Thursday's practice.
