Dow closes above 26000: Aus shares to open higher

Dow Jones industrial average futures traded 13 points higher, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.5 points. The Dow surged 1.3 percent to 26,115.65. That's faster than the 23 days it took the Dow to go from 24,000 to 25,000 points.

"Given the speed with which the Dow broke through 26,000 you have to question what stops it breaching 27,000, 28,000 or even 30,000", says Jacob Deppe, head of trading at online trading platform Infinox.

JD Sports saw its shares jump more than 6 per cent after it raised its guidance following a strong Christmas trading performance.

More than three-quarters of the 36 S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have topped earnings estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Many firms have reported similar fourth quarter hits to earnings due to the tax reform, but expect to benefit from the changes in the months ahead.

Elsewhere, equity indices in the Asia-Pacific region finished Tuesday mostly higher.

In Europe, the Stoxx 600 Index ended the day with a 0.1 percent advance from the previous close.

Meanwhile, the dollar tried to break a four-session losing run on Tuesday, edging up as U. While the U.K.'s FTSE 100 Index is down by 0.1 percent, the French CAC 40 Index is up by 0.2 percent and the German DAX Index is up by 0.9 percent.
