Officer Justin Billa was shot and killed late Tuesday night responding to the murder of a Mobile woman.

Officer Justin Billa approached the home of Robert Hollie, who is suspected of shooting his wife. Nexstar affiliate News 5 has learned more about Officer Billa based on a 2016 honor naming him Officer of the Month.

Police in Mobile say it happened just after midnight when they responded to a shooting on Avondale Court. Billa works in the Third Precinct and has been a police officer since January this year. He didn't offer much information on Billa, saying he still needed to visit the University of South Alabama Medical and speak with Billa's wife.

According to the Mobile Police Department's website, Billa was named police officer of the month in June 2016.

The woman was identified as Hollie's ex-wife, Fonda Poellnitz, and he was quickly named as the suspect. "I pray for the officers each and every day".

"Billa has great attention to detail skills and shows commitment daily to providing a professional level of law enforcement service to the city of Mobile".

Back in September, we interviewed Fonda about an alligator living in the waterway in her neighborhood.

SWAT teams arrived on the scene around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday after a person barricaded themselves in a home. "That's my idea of good policing and I feel like that's what the chief is working towards". "He didn't love my momma", the daughter said. In this photo, Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel Steven Flaherty gets a hug following the funeral for Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M.
