At $399 (Rs 27,500 approximately), the device is $400 cheaper than the current Surface Pro tablet, but has slower Intel Corp. processors and about four hours less battery time, Microsoft said.

The original Surface Pro design, which has been around since 2014, is still here. The new tablet weighs 1.15 pounds, far lighter than existing Surface products.

Microsoft Corp is going for the low-end of the personal computing market with a smaller, cheaper Surface Go tablet that takes on Apple Inc's cheapest iPads.

The Surface Go certainly seems to fill a gap in the range for Microsoft and we were fans of the Surface 3, not least because it offered numerous advantages of Microsoft's brilliant 2-in-1 design from the full-blown Surface Pro.

Moving to the internal elements, an Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y is the go-to processor for the Surface Go.

The Surface Go has two variants: a $399 4 GB RAM version with 128 GB of SSD storage, or one with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB of SSD storage, which bumps the price up to $549.

Like Microsoft's earlier devices, the Surface Go is to work with optional keyboards and mouses. In the software realm, the Surface Go has Windows 10 in S Mode.

To the Surface Go. You'll have to buy that (along with any other integral Surface accessories) separately - which partially offsets the cheaper price.

The Surface Go has a custom-built high-resolution PixelSense Display supporting Surface Pen with 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity, low pen parallax, low latency, and precision for accurate note taking, drawing and computer-aided design.

In terms of connectivity, the Pro shows its age a little by offering a traditional USB-A 3.0 port, alongside amicroSDXC card reader, miniDisplayPort output, Surface port for power, and a headphone jack.

Microsoft made no mention of what version of Windows 10 this runs but, as it hasn't specifically stated it, it's likely you'll be working with Windows 10 Home instead of the pared-down Windows found on the Surface Laptop. In this head to head, we pitted the Surface Go versus the Surface Pro to find out where the best value for money lies.

The Surface Go Signature Type Cover offers a keyboard and a trackpad, converting the tablet into a mini portable laptop setup. Then, when it comes to cameras, the tablet is equipped with a 5-megapixel Windows Hello face sign-in camera and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus.

Initially, only the Surface Go with Wi-Fi will be available for pre-order with products beginning to hit shelves on August 2.
