A 77-year-old matriarch and 10 members of her family were found dead at their Delhi home Sunday morning.
"It is still too early (to know what happened)".
Police said there were no bullet marks on the bodies of seven women and four men. Bhavnesh's wife Savita (48) and their three children-Meenu (23), Neetu (25) and Dhruv (15) were also found dead, police said, adding Lalit's wife Tina (42) along with their 15-year-old son Shivam was also among the dead. This angle was being investigated and a case of murder registered, the statement by Delhi Police said. The notes - which talk of unusual religious beliefs - provide a motive in the case, say the police, who initially thought it was mass suicide and then said it could be mass murder by one of the family, who then committed suicide.
The family reportedly stayed at a double-storey home in Sant Nagar area of Burari and ran a grocery shop and plywood business.
The family had lived in the house for more than two decades, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported. 'We can't rule out anything, ' he said.
A neighbour who refused to believe that it was a case of mass suicide said Lalit and Bhupinder were very friendly persons.
News agencies quoted an unnamed police officer as saying a probe will be conducted to find "if the family indulged in occult practices" or they followed "any godman".
All the family members had died and there were no witnesses.
The incident has caught the attention of the capital, and chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, and Congress leader J.P. Aggarwal visited the area to express their condolences.
"I spoke to their neighbors".
Neighbours said that the family was religious and they never saw anything suspicious. The police investigation is but prima facie suicide due to certain "spiritual/mystical" practice seems to be the motive behind the deaths. The bodies are set to undergo autopsies to check for additional clues.
Police are now reviewing surveillance footage in the area as well as interviewing neighbors to determine what happened.
Police official Rajesh Khurana told reporters that all angles were being investigated.
