Per a report by industry bible THR, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3" is officially on hold with pre-production effectively halted after crew members who were assembling for the movie were apparently told that they were free to look for other work. In the wake of firing James Gunn as the director of the film a month ago, it appears as though Disney's search for a replacement has been harder than anticipated, with the studio reportedly putting the film on hiatus.
Despite the best efforts of a widely-signed petition and an open letter from the cast, director James Gunn will not be returning to direct the next film in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Pre-production was set to begin this fall ahead of filming beginning in either January or February, but those plans have now been scuttled.
Gunn had written and directed the first two films, which were box office successes. "The timeline has been pushed out", a source tells the outlet. There were even rumblings that even Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was lobbying Horn to re-hire Gunn, but it's now become clear that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be moving forward without the franchise's creator at the helm. Despite apologizing for said tweets, admitting that there was a time in which he sought to shock people with his sense of humor, the mouse house insisted Gunn's tweets went against the company's values and made a decision to cut business ties with him. Members of the cast, and in particular Drax actor Dave Bautista, have been supportive of Gunn and in some cases joined calls for him to be reinstated.
