Patriots, Browns close to deal on Josh Gordon trade

As Rapoport revealed, the deal is for a conditional fifth-round pick, which can mean a few different things.

Wide receiver Josh Gordon is headed to the Patriots.

The Browns announced their intentions to release Gordon after landing in New Orleans for Sunday's game against the Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, and San Francisco 49ers also spoke to Cleveland about a potential Gordon trade.

Then, Gordon returned to the team days prior to the preseason finale only to suffer a hamstring injury that kept him out of practice until the Wednesday before the regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"For the past six years, the Browns have fully supported and invested in Josh, both personally and professionally, and wanted the best for him, but unfortunately we've reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward". He'd been absent from the Browns since the beginning of training camp, reportedly to seek treatment for anxiety and mental health as he prepared to return from the latest of his series of suspensions under the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Gordon's tantalizing talent had caused the Browns to hang onto him while he dealt with drug and alcohol dependence. The receiver has missed a total of 54 games over the past four seasons (2014-17) due to multiple National Football League suspensions. Gordon has only made it through an entire 16-game season one time, and that came in his rookie year of 2012.

Now with Gordon in the picture, here's what the Patriots depth chart looks like.
