Announcing the results, the governor of Delta state and Chairman of the PDP 2018 National Convention Planning Committee, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, said he polled 693 votes.

PoliticsNGR earlier reported that the Governors under the party had earlier met with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Also in the running is Donald Duke, the former governor of the southern Cross River state, whose opposition Social Democratic Party formally elected him its flag-bearer on Sunday. That is to say, we will all work for the development of the country.

In August, he declared an intention to contest in the 2019 presidential election under the umbrella of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). "As governors, we will lead to your campaign and will ensure to your victory", he assured President Buhari.

Atiku defeated other aspirants such as Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, Sokoto state governor, Aminu Tambuwal, among others.

"We are with you and confident that with us as a team May 29 2019 will be a day that our party will take over".

However, 68 votes were void.

"Thank you for choosing me", Abubakar said on Twitter. "I need your support, I need your understanding", he told his fellow aspirants.

Dickson described the primaries that produced Atiku as the freest and best election ever conducted in the history of the country.

Mr Abubakar, who spoke without a prepared script, commended his challengers, saying they showed "a sense of unity, a sense of goal and a sense of commitment".

"I can not compel all the 14 governors to vote a particular aspirant".

Mr Abubakar is expected to be the main challenger to Mr Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

But next year's presidential race appears to have tightened in recent months with the APC hit by a wave of defections over Buhari's leadership style.
