"I was standing at the counter, and I was sexually assaulted", she said in what could best be described as a surreal interview where Klein tackled numerous random topics."I understand how it looks but she escalated and then I lost my temper at her not at that child".
Littlejohn, who captured the video, said he's haunted by the memory of the crying child: "I was really disgusted by the situation, ' he told USA TODAY on Friday".
In what has since become a viral video on social media, Klein allegedly told a 9-1-1 dispatcher she needed police immediately, prompting gut-wrenching cries from the boy and his younger sister.
Many, including Klein herself, have noted the appearance of racial profiling: "White lady calling. the cops on a black lady, I get it", she says to an increasingly hostile crowd gathered around her as she talks on the phone, purportedly to a 911 operator.
In the wake of the public uproar over the incident, Ms Klein tried to make amends for her accusations. "As you can see the kid is crying and the mom is upset", Littlejohn wrote on Facebook.
The Facebook video has been viewed over 5.9 million times.
Ms Klein also claimed to be a police officer, which she is not. The 9-year-old walked by her and his backpack grazed her. Jason Littlejohn, the man who recorded Klein told Pix 11 News, "How could she be sexually assaulted by a 9-year-old child who was walking by?"
"While I do not know the nine-year-old boy personally, I can not go to sleep tonight without doing something for him", Michael Skolnik, who launched the campaign, said. "Cornerstore Caroline. We have a new one".
The woman continues her tirade, telling the dispatcher: 'White lady calls the cops on black lady, I get it.
She has since returned to the store to review the CCTV footage. What you will clearly see is his bag of school uniforms lightly brush up against her. Not only that, but a brilliant local journalist Zainab Iqbal, found out that she never even called 911. "She just did not care".
On Friday, Klein was confronted by her neighbors and the media in the deli. She originally said that while she was at the counter, a young black boy touched her rear end as he was leaving. The trauma that this woman put him through is horrific. She has since been dubbed "Cornerstore Caroline" - a shoutout to other alliterative names like "Barbecue Becky" and "Permit Patty".
